TOP 10 OFFENSIVE LINEMEN
Josh Buchanan, JB Scouting
1. OT Matt Kalil, USC, 6’6 5/8, 306, 4.96 40
Kalil is widely projected as a top five pick after a career in which he
started two years and was a first-team All-American by Walter Camp, Pro
Football Weekly, Rivals.com, and first-team All-Pac-12. Kalil
is a big, athletic kid who needs technique work but has the potential
to be a franchise tackle.
2. OT Riley Reiff, Iowa, 6’5 ¾, 313, 4.94 40
Reiff was a first-team All-Big Ten selection who had a great finish to
a career that started out rough when he was in trouble with the law
before classes began. Some scouts have graded him as a tackle
who can play either side and some as a guard. His run
blocking ability, size, and plays with a nastiness that coaches
love. Expect him to be taken as high as the top 10.
3. OT Jonathan Martin, Stanford, 6’5 3/8, 312, 5.29 40
Stanford’s Andrew Luck had a brilliant career and was in part due to
the great play of his line, anchored by Martin. Martin was a
three-year starter for Stanford who earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors
in 2011 and first-team All-Pac-10 honors in 2010. He was an
honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection in 2009 as he was among the
better linemen in the conference as a freshman. The 2011 AP
second-team All-American showed good feet and lateral agility as well
as natural bend and foot quickness. His size and nasty streak
are two things that have many intrigued and should help him come off
the board in the top 15-20 picks.
4. OG David DeCastro, Stanford, 6’4 7/8, 316, 5.34 40
I mentioned the play of Stanford’s line with Martin and DeCastro was
just as much of a key part in that as Martin. DeCastro has
been a star since high school where he played in the Offense-Defense
All-American Bowl and then followed that up as a three-time
All-Conference selection. While he isn’t a great athlete he
is a big, strong, dominating run blocker with intelligence and
toughness. Expect him to be a top 15-20 selection like
Martin.
5. OT/OG Cordy Glenn, Georgia, 6’5 ¾, 345, 5.00 40
Like DeCastro, Glenn was a star in high school who also participated in
the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl and became a two-time
All-American for UGA. Glenn is big, strong, and can play
either guard or tackle. He’s a very good drive blocker who is
also able to get to the second level quickly. When you
combine his size, versatility, athletic ability, and consistency he is
a definite first-round pick.
