Welcome to the Patriots Insider 2012 NFL Draft Blog.
If you missed it in years past, that may be because it was well hidden
from many readers. Last year we used twitter updates almost
exclusively. Years past we used the boards.
While you can still fund our updates in both of those places (including
our Facebook page) we’ll focus Day one updates here in the
blog. Keep hitting F5 (windows) or click on your browser
refresh button to make sure you see the latest updates.
The Updates will start at the TOP for the most recent and push the
older updates downward. There will be some juicy stuff in the
first few posts, so it’s worth scrolling.
DAY ONE BLOG
TRADE AGAIN?!!!!: 10:30pm
The Patriots have made another trade. This time with the Denver
Broncos. We noted it on twitter moments ago.
Trade Details: 10:28pm
New England gave up their 1st round pick (27th overall from
the
Saints), and their third round pick (93rd overall) for Cincinnati's
21st overall pick.
THE PICK - DE Chandler Jones 10:21pm
According to ESPN"s Adam Schefter, the Patriots have made a trade to
get to the 21st spot from 27. With the 21st pick, New England
nabs their pass rusher of the future in Syracuse DE, Chandler
Jones
TRADE: 10:05pm
The Patriots finally find a trade partner. After watching a
number of their targets go to other teams, the Patriots couldn't wait
any longer to grab a defensive lineman who could help them.
The Patriots traded with the Cincinnati Bengals to move up
from 27 to 21. New England is expected to take Syracuse DE,
Chandler Jones according to a report by ESPN
Another Target Goes Early: 10:00pm
Shea
McClellin, LB from Boise State was one guy the Patriots spent
time with pre-Draft. He was expected to last until late in
the first round. The Chicago Bears decided they couldn't pass
him up at the No. 19 spot (8 picks ahead of the Patriots)

Three Targets Gone Already 9:29pm
Three guys the Patriots were reportedly interested in went off the
boards in relatively quick fashion. The Buffalo Bills
selected South Carolina, CB, Stephon Gilmore. The Philadelphia Eagles
traded with the Seattle Seahawks to move up to the No. 12 spot and
select Mississippi State DT, Fletcher Cox. Then the Rams opted to use
their first round pick (acquired from the Cowboys) on LSU DL, Michael
Brockers.
Chiefs Keep
Their Pick: 9:15pm
Despite the rumblings that the Chiefs were interested in
trading out of their spot in the first round -- multiple teams were
involved in those discussions according to our reports -- they kept it
and selected Memphis DT Dontari Poe. Poe had been rising up
Draft boards, reportedly including New England's. He's a big
run clogging defender with a solid burst. The main concerns
are his consistency and his technique.
Trades Are the
Game In Round One: 8:38pm
There have already been multiple trades in the Draft and we haven't
even reached the No. 10 spot yet. The Redskins started it off
early prior to the Draft, by trading multiple picks to the Rams to move
up to the second overall spot. They used it to grab Andrew
Luck. The Browns, also opted to cutoff teams who might want
the leapfrog them to get to the third spot, by trading with the Vikings
to move up from 4 to 3. The Jaguars moves from 7 to 5 by
trading with the Buccaneers. then the Cowboys traded with the
Rams to move up to 6 to select Mark Barron.
Colvin Is An
Ingram Fan: 6:48pm
Apparently former New England Patriots defensive end Rosevelt Colvin
would like the Patriots to step up to get a pass rusher. His
choice? South Carolina DE/DT Melvin
Ingram.
According to sources, the Patriots have had close contact with Ingram
leading up to the Draft and very well could be considering the dynamic
playmaker. Though it's hard to believe they may wait to take
one later in the round if they can't trade up to get the guy they
want.
AFC West Team
Identified:
6:07pm
We’ve been able to uncover the AFC West team that the Patriots were
supposedly interested in dealing with for a trade of one of their first
round picks. It’s the Kansas City Chiefs. Though there’s more to the
story, the gist is trading a player to New England for one of their
picks MORE
DETAILS: (Sub req'd)
Targeting No.
12: 5:13pm
The Patriots have reportedly inquired about the cost to move up in the
Draft to acquire the Seahawks pick at No. 12. New England has
denied the report, saying that no discussions have taken
place. Being a bit skeptical, the truth likely resides
somewhere in the middle. Obviously the Patriots talk to teams to gauge
potential trade scenarios. More than likely those discussions included
“what if” lines of questioning. Here's the original story on NFL.com
Who might they be looking at?
Try Alabama, S, Mark Barron, one of the best prospects available in the
Draft. New England desperately needs help in the secondary
and Barron would have an immediate impact. Other possibilities are LSU,
DE, Michael Brockers. There’s a remote chance they may want,
Boston College, LB, Luke Kuechly
Trade Rumors
Start: 3:30pm
The Patriots are one of the teams being mentioned as possible suitors
for a certain AFC West club who is willing to trade a player for one of
New England’s first four Draft picks. New England has four
picks in the first two rounds: 1st Round - Picks 27 and 31,
2nd Round – Picks 16 (48th overall) and 30 (62nd
overall). From what we’re being told, the Patriots
are being asked for one of their two 1st rounders for an unnamed
player.
INSIDER TAKE: Not sure what to make of this. New England isn’t likely
to give up a 1st round pick for an expensive veteran. Lots of
names come to mind, but the Pats have typically waited for teams to
release guys they’re desperate to unload. With of course the
exception of a guy like Randy Moss.
