Rex Ryan’s undying loyalty to quarterback Mark Sanchez is raising eyebrows and stirring controversy across the country. With fans clamoring for a quarterback change to be made, Ryan isn’t worried about his job security and refuses to succumb to pressure from the outside to make a switch.
“If that day ever happens, then it happens, but I’m never going to waver,” mentioned Ryan as to whether he’s worried about getting fired. “I’m not going to make a decision one way or the other to try to save my job. I’m trying to win games.
Winning football games hasn’t exactly come easy for the Jets as they sit in the cellar of the AFC East at 3-6, closer to a top draft selection than postseason contention. Sanchez has absorbed most of the blame for Gang Green’s recent struggles, but according to Ryan the issues are more far more involved than inconsistent quarterback play.
“It’s easy to say, ‘Look guys, if it’s just one position, than that’s what the entire focus would be,’ but there are a lot of things,” said Ryan of his team’s deficiencies. “Is it getting separation on our routes? Are we catching the football on a consistent basis? How about the protection? There are a lot of things that go into evaluating a quarterback. If it was just one guy, than that’s easy to do. You just focus on this, but collectively we have to get better.”
With star players Darrelle Revis and Santonio Holmes injured and sidelined for the remainder of the season, questions are mounting whether the current Jets roster has enough talent to compete. New York has been plagued by injuries on both sides of the ball, but despite all its ill-fortunes and falling on hard times, Ryan hasn’t lost faith in his team’s resiliency.
I know that we have talent. We have talent not just as players, but on this coaching staff. I just feel we’re going to get this thing fixed.
The Jets head man will stop short of nothing to ensure that his team is relevant once again.
Whatever it takes,"Ryan said. "I know one thing, we're going to get this done or die trying, and that's how we'll approach it.”
