Patriots Release TE Aaron Hernandez

The New England Patriots wasted little time deciding the fate of tight end Aaron Hernandez after his arrest. The team announced that he was released.

With a homicide investigation clouding over Aaron Hernandez for over a week, it was a wonder whether the Patriots right end would play in the NFL again.

For now, it's unlikely he'll be playing football anytime soon.

Shortly after Hernandez was arrested Wednesday morning, the Patriots announced it has released the troubled tight end.

"A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss," the Patriots said in a statement. "Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do."

It's unclear if Hernandez was charged with obstruction of justice or anything greater at this time. The charge won't be revealed until he appears in court.

Hernandez's name has been tied to the death of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, a semi-pro football player whose body was found near a rental car registered in Hernandez's name over a week ago. Lloyd was spotted partying with Hernandez the night before his body was found.

Hernandez was drafted out of the University of Florida in the fourth round of the 2010 draft. It was revealed recently that multiple teams had taken him off their draft boards due to a troubled past that included drugs and guns in college.
