New England announced the signing of three tight ends, including East Carolina's Justin Jones, Bowling Green's Tyler Beck and North Carolina State's Asa Watson on Monday. Running back Roy Finch, cornerback Travis Hawkins, safety Shamiel Gray, running back Stephen Houston, and linebackers Cameron Gordon and Deontae Skinner were among the other players to be picked up as free agents.
Jones recorded 25 catches for 346 yards with three touchdowns in the 2012 season. He was unable to play in the 2013 season due to academic sanctions. However, he ran a 4.90-second 40-yard dash and 6.88-second three-cone drill in the Detroit Regional Scouting Combine back in March.
Beck had 10 passes for 177 yards including two touchdowns during his final season with the Bowling Green Falcons.
Watson caught 24 passes for 282 yards and one touchdown in the 2012 season. The 6-foot-2 tight end is the brother of the Patriots 2004 first-round draft pick Ben Watson.
Finch, a product of Oklahoma, had 262 carries for 1,412 yards including six touchdowns during his career with the Sooners. He also caught 58 passes for two touchdowns and 442 yards. In addition, Finch was used as a kick returner recording 1,099 yards and a touchdown with 43 kick returns.
Delaware cornerback Travis Hawkins had four interceptions in his last season and was also used as a kick returner. In his March pro day, he ran a 4.37-second 40-yard dash.
Gray, a safety out of Oklahoma State, recorded six sacks in his four year collegiate career and ran a 4.50-second 40-yard dash at his March pro day.
Houston had 424 carries for 2,304 yards and 25 touchdowns during his three year career with Indiana. He also caught 65 passes for 658 yards. Houston shined at the Combine as his 40-inch vertical leap and 11-foot broad jump were among the best of the weekend.
In his last season with Michigan, Gordon had five sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. He ran a 4.72-second 40-yard dash with a 6.74-second three-cone drill.
Skinner recorded 64 tackles, a sack and 4.5 tackles for loss in his last season with Mississippi State. He ran a 4.81-second 40-yard dash at his pro day in March.
According to NFL sources, defensive back Jeremy Deering out of Rudgers has also been signed by New England, however, the deal has not been officially announced.
