Former
Patriot To Be Honored
Irving Fryar and fellow Huskers to be recognized
By
Patriots Insider Staff
New England Patriots legend Irving Fryar is scheduled
to attend the Nebraska Cornhuskers Red-White Spring Game, along with other former
great Cornhuskers from the NFL, past and present.
An All-American at Nebraska,
Fryar was selected first overall by New England in the 1984 NFL Draft and played
in one Super Bowl with five Pro Bowl appearances. He was best known in Nebraska
for being part of the "triplets", a dominating offensive force also
known as "The Scoring Explosion." He will be honored along with
fellow "Explosion" teammates Turner Gill and Mike Rozier, and
20 other Huskers.
A former first round draft pick (1984) by the Patriots,
he epitomized the value teams can get by selecting a promising young wide receiver
in the first day of the NFL Draft. While not the most widely known in the league
during his days, he was a productive and reliable target.
Fryar made his
name in New England for his on-field plays and unfortunately, his off-field troubles.
When he moved from New England to Miami, then Philadelphia and eventually to Washington,
he extended his career far beyond what is typical for an NFL player.
After
17 long seasons, Fryar ended his career in Washington and is listed as the 6th
all-time leader in NFL receptions (851), and 8th in overall career receiving yardage
(12,785).
Fryar may be fondly remembered by Patriots fans who saw him set
a personal best for receiving yards in a game (211), as a member of the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins were playing in a division matchup against his former team,
the Patriots, September 4th, 1994. His record, still stands second best in Dolphins
team history. An ordained minister, Fryar was known as "The Rev" around
the locker room. He now resides with his family in Jobstown, N.J.
