Patriots Release Seven More

The New England Patriots made their roster cuts to comply with an NFL mandate to trim rosters to 65 players not including NFL Europe exemptions or those on reserve lists. The team parted ways with seven players in order to be in compliance with the cut down deadline. Of those on the list, the biggest name in the group is RB/KR Chad Morton.

FOXBOROUGH — In effect, the first wave or roster cuts consists of two sets of players - those caught in numbers game and others who were long shots whose best chance lie in auditing for another team.

By releasing this group, the roster will be trimmed to the league-mandated 65 limit, not including injury and NFL Europe exemptions

Kick returner / running back Chad Morton who had been signed by the Patriots to shore up the special teams, found himself among the cuts in spite of still being on the Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP). Players on the PUP do not count as one of the 65 until such time as they are activated. PUP players must be activated by week 7 of the season, or be placed on the Reserve Injured (I/R) list ending their season.

The List of Seven Cuts:

WR, Jason Anderson, Rookie
OL, Ryan Krug, Rookie
RB/KR, Chad Morton, 6th-year

There will be another final round of cuts September 4th, when all teams will be required to pare their rosters to the regular season 53-man limit. All NFL exemptions will end, and players will either have to be released, or designated as one of the reserve or active list members. Players on the PUP list may be activated at any time before week 7 of the season at which time they will count against the 53-player limit. Players on I/R do not count against the team limit, but are ineligible to play for the rest of the season.
