Patriots WR Tim Dwight Joins The Jets

Posted Mar 23, 2006

The New York Jets announced the signing of former Patriots' free agent wide receiver and kick returner Tim Dwight on Wednesday. Dwight, 30, agreed to a four-year, $4.2 million contract and will receive a $750,000 signing bonus according to ESPN.

The 5-foot-8, 180-pound speedster agreed to joined the Jets after visiting with the Pittsburgh Steelers just the day before. Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum introduced Dwight to the media.

"Tim provides us with a proven punt returner and a different type of receiver Tannenbaum said. "His style blends speed and a change of pace that adds a different dimension to our receiving group. He is a high-character player who will be a good fit in our system."

The former Iowa product was well liked in New England, as much for being the little guy that could, as for being a player that brought excitement to the field. Dwight returned kicks, spent some time at receiver and even carried the ball on a couple of running plays. But in spite of all that, he felt underutilized.

"New England wanted me back, but I wanted to explore my options a little bit, you know, fit somewhere else where I could play a little bit," Dwight told his home paper the Iowa City Press-Citizen. "(New England) was thinking of me as still a fourth or fifth receiver.

"I wanted a chance to get an opportunity to be that third receiver and fit in and return punts."

Dwight managed 19 receptions for 332 yards and three touchdowns in 2005. His also ran the ball four times for 11 yards. As a kick returner, Dwight made 10 kickoff returns for 250 yards (25 yard avg) and 32 punt returns for 273 yards (8.5 yard avg) with 13 balls fair caught.

In New York Dwight is reunited with former Patriots coordinator Eric Mangini and former Chargers coach Brian Schottenheimer. He was anxious to get started after being introduced by the Jets.

"I would like to thank Coach Mangini and Mike Tannenbaum for making me part of the Jets organization," Dwight said. "I am eager to join my new teammates in the off-season workout program and prepare for the upcoming season."

In eight seasons Dwight has managed 172 receptions for 2754 yards with 17 touchdowns.

Originally a fourth-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 1998 NFL Draft, Dwight has played for the Atlanta Falcons (1998-2000), San Diego Chargers (2001-04) and the Patriots (2005).
