UDFAs Signing Quickly

The annual mad dash to sign undrafted rookies immediately after the Draft continues. The New England Patriots are one of those teams actively sifting through the list to find the players they need. Many of these UDFAs are just happy to have an opportunity to compete for a job in the NFL.

-- Previously reported by PatriotsInsider.com and Scout.com, the Patriots added QB Corey Bramlet to the list of new faces. Corey is the younger brother of Casey Bramlet, also a former Wyoming quarterback. The Cincinnati Bengals drafted the elder in the seventh round of the 2004 NFL Draft.

With the news of Doug Flutie possibly retiring, the team will consider bringing in additional quarterbacks to compete.

-- Three Florida players, offensive lineman Randy Hand, safety Jarvis Herring and DB/KR Vernell Brown agreed to join the Patriots. Hand's agent confirmed to Patriots Insider Monday that the 6-foot-6, 305-pound tackle was headed to New England. Brown and Herring were previously reported by Scout.com on the Master list (found here).

-- Delaware State safety Sam Smith has agreed to join the team in what is being reported as a two-year deal. The undrafted Smith worked out for the Patriots in early April as reported by Patriots Insider, and will compete for a roster spot with other rookies and free agents.

-- Notre Dame undrafted free agents receiver Matt Shelton, and linebacker Corey Mays have also agreed to terms with the Patriots. The pair of former Irish players will join teammate Dan Stevenson who was drafted by the Patriots in the sixth round of the 2006 NFL Draft.

-- Offensive guard Brian Barthelmes of Virginia has agreed to terms with the Patriots. The former Cavalier was one of a number of Virginia players the Patriots scouted. His fellow teammates D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Brad Butler both heard their names called during the Draft, Ferguson in the first round and Butler in the sixth. New England also worked out Cavalier quarterback Marques Hagans before the draft. The St. Louis Rams drafted Hagans who will most likely change position to receiver in the NFL.

Patriots Insider subscribers can review the Scout.com master list of Undrafted Free Agents which is updated daily and can found in the Insider's Lounge.

PatriotsInsider.com and Scout.com will continue tracking players as they agree to terms or have tryouts with teams through minicamp and on into training camp.
