The New England Patriots released place kicker Martin Gramatica today ending a roster battle between the seven-year veteran and rookie kicker Stephen Gostkowski. The Patriots signed Gramatica as an unrestricted free agent on April 6, 2006.

The Kansas State product was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft (80th overall). He spent time with just two teams before joining the Patriots, Tampa Bay (1999-2004) and the Indianapolis Colts (2004).

When Gostkowski was drafted by New England in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft, the veteran said all the right things, playing the role of mentor for the young understudy. Gramatica shared reps with the rookie throughout camp and during the team's first preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons going 2 for 2 on field goal attempts with one successful PAT.

During training camp, both kickers their kicks charted and analyzed by fans and media alike. It was Gostkowski who was given an opportunity to prove he was up to the task in the team's second preseason game against the Cardinals. Gramatica did not play in the game.

Gramatica who had one pro bowl appearance (2000) still holds many of the Buccaneers career kicking records including; scoring (591 points), field goals made (137) and field goal attempts (179).
