Patriots Release 10 and Trade One

FOXBORO, Mass. -- The New England Patriots announced the release of ten players today as they worked to reduce the roster to meet a league limit of 53 by Saturday. New England also traded rookie running back Patrick Cobbs to the Pittsburgh Steelers for an undisclosed draft pick Cobbs, a preseason playmaker was unlikely to clear waivers should the team have made the attempt.

The players released today contained a couple of significant surprises, but not altogether unforeseen. LB Monty Beisel had worked his way down the depth chart from starter to special teams contributor before finally being released. Florida rookie Jeremy Mincey struggled with the transition from down lineman to linebacker, and the learning curve appeared to be a bit too steep. One other notable cut was cornerback Eric Warfield who looked solid at times in camp and lost in coverage during games. Warfield's athletic ability wasn't enough to give him the edge over more versatile players like Artrell Hawkins, Randall Gay and Chad Scott who all played corner and safety for the Patriots.
