Patriots Sign DB Iwuoma and OL Bubin

FOXBORO, Mass. - The New England Patriots signed defensive back Chidi Iwuoma to the active roster, and offensive lineman Sean Bubin to the practice squad Wednesday October 4, 2006. Both players were free agents at the time of their signing. Terms of the deals were not released.

Iwuoma, 28, has played for the Detroit Lions (2001) and Pittsburgh Steelers (2002-05). The 5-foot-9-inch, 184-pound defensive back and special teams player has managed 80 special teams tackles and 10 defensive stops in his five-year career. Iwuoma was released by the Steelers September 6, 2006

Bubin, 25, a reserve lineman out of Illinois was a member of the Jaguars and Lions (2004), and more recently spent time on the Minnesota Vikings practice squad (2005). The 6-foot-6, 305-pound lineman was originally chosen by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2004 NFL Draft (159th overall). Bublin played for the Hamburg Sea Devils of the NFL Europe League in 2006. The Vikings released him on August 17, 2006.

The team still has one spot available on the practice squad. The 53-man roster has not been filled.

Maroney Nominated

Running Back Laurence Maroney has been nominated as one of the finalists for the Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week award. Maroney had 15 carries for 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Cincinnati Bengals in week four.

Maroney was also nominated as one of three finalists for the FedEx Air and Ground player of the week for his work in Cincinnati . He is up against Clinton Portis (Washington) and Julius Jones (Dallas).
