FOXBORO, Mass. -- The New England Patriots re-signed free agent linebacker Junior Seau today. Terms of the deal were not available. The 17-year veteran returns for his second go-around with the team, and another shot at the elusive championship ring.
First signed by the as a free agent by Patriots as a free agent on August 18, 2006, Seau immediately made an impact on the roster. Starting at inside linebacker next to Tedy Bruschi, Seau played in 11 games before suffering a traumatic arm injury that ended his season. During those games, Seau managed 70 tackles, enough to rank fifth on the team despite not appearing in the final 5 games of the season.
The former USC Product was originally drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the first round of the 1990 NFL Draft (5th overall). After 13 seasons, the Chargers traded Seau to the Miami Dolphins for a fifth-round draft pick. After two seasons in Miami, the former Dolphin retired calling it "his graduation" in a press conference in San Diego. A few days later, Seau, unretired at the urging of Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and Seau's former Charger teammate Rodney Harrison to join the AFC East defending champion Patriots.
