FOXBORO, Mass. -- The New England Patriots signed TE Brian Jones today. Terms
of the deal were not announced. The team also released TE Matt Kranchick.
Jones, 25, last played for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2005. The 6-foot-3,
258-pound tight end out of Arkansas-Pine Bluff spent 2006 on Jacksonville's
injured reserve list with a knee injury. He was signed by the Jaguars as an
undrafted rookie free agent in 2004.
The Louisiana native has 9 receptions for 146 yards and a TD over his three year
career. He appeared in 29 games with one start for the Jaguars.

Kranchick was released by the New England Patriots today. The 6-foot-7, 260-pound
tight end started for the Patriots in their preseason opener against the Buccaneers
on Friday night, but recorded no stats.
The 27-year old was originally was signed by the Patriots in December 2006
and designated for the practice squad. In January he moved to the active roster.
He attended the team's minicamp before returning for the team's training camp
in July.
Kranchick was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round
(194th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft. He played for the Steelers (2004-05)
and the New York Giants (2005) before joining the Patriots.
The Patriots have four other tight ends on the roster including; Kyle Brady, Ben Watson,
David Thomas and the recently acquired Marcellus Rivers.
