The New England Patriots announced the signing of free agent wide receiver Jabar Gaffney Today. Gaffney agreed to a reported one-year deal. He could have gone elsewhere, but chose to return to Foxboro instead.

FOXBORO -- The New England Patriots announced the official signing of free agent wide receiver Jabar Gaffney today. Gaffney agreed to a reported one-year, $2 million deal. The six-year wideout will return for his third season in New England.

Gaffney is the second free agent receiver to re-sign with the team. Randy Moss signed earlier this week.

The Patriots needed to sign some receivers after letting three of their top four pass catchers from 2007 hit the free agent market. Moss and Gaffney re-signed while Donte Stallworth chose greener pastures. Only Wes Welker, the team's leader in receptions (112), was under contract for 2008.

"Jabar is a good fit for our offense," said Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick in a statement. "He has been a versatile and dependable player who steps up in whatever role is asked of him."

Gaffney's 36 receptions for 449 yards and five touchdowns over the regular season came mostly in reserve duty for the Patriots. Moss and Wes Welker were Tom Brady's primary targets compared to the prior year when Gaffney was the main man with Reche Caldwell.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound wide receiver was originally signed by the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent in the middle of the 2006 season after being released by the Philadelphia Eagles prior to the start of the regular season. The 27 year old former University of Florida Gator was selected by the Houston Texans in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft.

Gaffney has played for the Texans (2002-05) and the Patriots (2006-07). He has recorded 218 receptions for 2,600 yards and 13 touchdowns in his six year regular season career.
