Patriots Add Another Playmaker

PatriotsInsider.com confirmed that the New England Patriots signed free agent wide receiver Robert Ortiz. The former SDSU star will add more competition for the reserve receivers on the roster.

Patriots Insider has confirmed that the New England Patriots added yet another receiver to the roster. 6-foot-1, 191-pound San Diego State product Robert Ortiz agreed to terms with the the team.

Ortiz was originally signed by the San Diego Chargers as a free agent in 2006. He was released prior to the start of the regular season. Ortiz was assigned to NFL Europe where he played for the Frankfurt Galaxy. He was signed by the Seattle Seahawks, but released prior to the start of the 2007 regular season and remained out of the league last year.

Ortiz will join fellow Patriot receivers Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Jabar Gaffney, Kelley Washington, Sam Aiken, Chad Jackson and C.J. Jones.

If he is going to make the final roster, he will need to show that he can perform multiple duties, including work on special teams. Versatility is important to the Patriots at the receiver position. Both Washington and Aiken are widely regarded as special teams standouts in addition to being reserve role players at the receiver position.
