The New England Patriots re-signed linebacker Eric Alexander Wednesday. The fifth-year veteran was an exclusive rights free agent.
Alexander appeared in 30 career games with one start (the 2006 AFC Championship game) for the Patriots. He recorded 14 regular season special teams tackles in 12 games last year. He made eight special teams tackles in the team's 3 postseason contests including three against the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.
The 6-foot-2, 240-pound LSU product originally joined the Patriots as an undrafted rookie free agent in April 2004. He made his first career start against the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 20, 2004.
The Patriots released three rookies Wednesday: Tyson DeVree (Colorado), Henry Smith (Texas A&M) and Casey Tyler (Portland State). All three players signed with the team as undrafted rookie free agents.
Tight end Tyson DeVree joined the Patriots after a tryout with the team during their rookie minicamp in early May. The 6-foot-6, 245-pound Colorado product was invited to the Patriots rookie minicamp May 2-3. He was signed to a deal on May 4th. An Honorable Mention AP All Big-12 performer, DeVree recorded 28 receptions for 308 yards (11.0 avg.) with six touchdown his final season at Colorado.
Defensive lineman Henry Smith signed with the Patriots following the Draft as a rookie free agent on May 1, 2008. The 6-foot-3, 325-pound Texas A&M product was working as an interior lineman at the team's recent minicamps. Smith appeared in 13 games for the Aggies in 2007, recording 34 tackles (9 solo), 7 tackles for a loss with one sack for 5 yards. He also managed 2 passes defensed and 1 quarterback hurry.
Defensive lineman Casey Tyler joined the Patriots for their first rookie minicamp in early May after signing with the team as an undrafted rookie free agent. The 6-foot-6, 310-pound Portland State product earned Honorable Mention All Big-Sky Conference honors in 2005 and again in 2007. Tyler appeared in 9 games last year recording 43 tackles (23 solo), 8 tackles for a loss and four sacks (2 solo). Tyler also has a blocked kick to his credit.
