FOXBORO -- The surprises never end in New England. The New England Patriots have released veteran safety John Lynch and confirmed the release of receiver Chad Jackson. In addition, the team signed six players to the Patriots practice squad.

The New England Patriots decided that another veteran safety wasn't what the team needed so they released John Lynch today. The team appreciation for the veteran defender via a team statement

"It goes without saying but John is an all-time great safety, one of the league's classiest professionals and his elite play speaks for itself," said Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. "As has been the case in other situations, I would not rule anything out down the road."

Lynch responded by issuing his own statement, also published via a team press release.

"I have no regrets about my time thus far with the Patriots," said Lynch. "The immense respect that I've long held for the organization has been only heightened over the past couple of weeks. I am going to keep all options open and look forward with excitement to see what the future brings."

The Patriots decision to part ways with Lynch a day after the main roster cuts is a clear indication that they're in the process of signing other players to the roster and need the space.

Lynch was signed by the Patriots on August 15, 2008 after asking for and receiving his release from the Denver Broncos on July 31, 2008. Originally Drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round (82nd overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft. Lynch played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1993-2003) and the Denver Broncos (2004-07) before joining the Patriots.

Jackson Release Confirmed

New England also confirmed an earlier report by Scout.com that wide receiver Chad Jackson has been released. The Patriots selected the former Gator in the second round (36th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft. New England traded up in the Draft to obtain Jackson after Bill Belichick spent time in Florida personally scouting players prior to the Draft.

Jackson 's career in New England was marred by injury. As a rookie he suffered from hamstring problems. He tore his knee up in the AFC Championship loss to the Indianapolis Colts, which force him to begin his sophomore season on the team's reserve/PUP list. Jackson played in 12 games as a rookie, managing 13 receptions for 152 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Patriots Claim Tight End

A league source confirmed to PatriotsInsider.com that the New England Patriots have claimed tight end Jason Pociask off waivers from the New York Jets. Pociask was released by New York as part of the final round of roster cuts. New York opted to retain veteran -- and former packer -- Bubba Franks over Pociask.

Report: Patriots Claim Offensive Lineman

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the New England Patriots have claimed former St. Louis Rams offensive lineman Mark LeVoir off of waivers. The 6-foot-6, 315-pound Notre Dame product has not participated in any NFL games since being signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Chicago Bears in May 2006. LeVoir spent two seasons with the Chicago Bears before being signed off the Bears practice squad by the Rams in November 2007.

Practice Squad Additions

The team also announced the signing of six players to the practice squad. All six participated in the team's training camp and preseason games.

The six are:
DL Titus Adams
S Mark Dillard
RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis
LB Vince Redd
CB Mike Richardson
DB Antwain Spann
