Hot Coaching Candidates

Josh McDaniels a hot candidate

As the coaching world turns, plenty of coordinators getting their chance to make a good impression. Hot names on the list include: Leslie Frazier, Josh McDaniels and Steve Spagnuolo

While the Broncos continue to redefine due diligence in their coaching search - they interviewed their seventh candidate Thursday - the Browns became the first team to hire a new head man by signing Eric Mangini to a four-year deal. Seattle technically filled its position first, but Jim Mora was named the successor-in-waiting last offseason.

That leaves five current openings, with Kansas City a possible sixth. Herm Edwards' fate won't be determined until a new general manager is hired. The Colts' Tony Dungy is pondering his future, but assistant Jim Caldwell will take over should Dungy retire.

How fast the rest of the dominos fall could depend on the outcome of the Divisional Playoffs.

Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan is drawing interest from multiple teams, but won't interview with anyone until after Saturday's game. And if Baltimore wins, Ryan can be interviewed but cannot be hired until Baltimore's season ends.

The same is true for Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who has already interviewed with Denver and the Jets. He's expected to take one of the openings, but which one remains to be determined with the Giants heading into Sunday's showdown with Philadelphia.

Because Ryan and Spagnuolo are so coveted, it's slowing down the process for most every other team. The Broncos will have no shortage of people to turn to should Spagnuolo not be the choice, and the Jets have also conducted multiple interviews. But both teams may also be waiting for the Giants to be eliminated before making their next move.

With Detroit, Oakland and St. Louis also have openings, other hot names making the interview circuit with multiple teams include Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Dolphins secondary coach Todd Bowles and Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.

Spagnuolo is reportedly starting to garner increased interest from the Rams as well.
