Cassel Talks About Being A Backup

Matt Cassel

Burlington, MA -- Matt Cassel is more than just a backup quarterback turned into a full time starter out of necessity, he's a potential star. Cassel spoke with the media recently about his future status with the Patriots and the honor of being named Vizio's Top Performer of 2008.

Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel has build a reputation for himself as a starter in the NFL. Once considered just a "high school" quarterback by some analysts, Cassel has proven his doubters wrong.

When Tom Brady went down with a season-ending knee injury, Cassel was there to fill the void. Though he struggled early, Cassel eventually settled in as the game slowed down for him behind center. He finished among the top ten quarterbacks in the league for yardage (8th) and passer rating (10th). Cassel is scheduled to become a free agent this year as his rookie contract expired at the end of the 2008 NFL season.

Comcast SportsNet's Michael Felger caught up with Cassel as the Patriots quarterback conducted a media tour via satellite for the Vizio Top Value Performer of the Year award. Cassel was named Vizio's Top Performer.

Here is a short Q&A from the interview. The remainder of which can be heard on Comcast SportsNet, or seen on Sports Tonight on Thursday .

On talking with the Patriots about the future…
“No, they haven’t started discussions at all. We’re just kind of sitting here. I am working hard, but right now it’s just a waiting game really to figure out what is going to happen next.”

On returning to New England as Tom Brady’s backup…
“If the situation is what it is, then I would accept it and I would continue to do what I have done my entire career which is work hard, put my best foot forward and continue to work on the things that I need to and put out my best effort.”

On whether he wants to play for another team…
“I don’t know right now. Right now, I am just enjoying the off season. We are still fresh off the year. I am just excited about working hard and getting better and seeing what the future has to hold.”
