Could the Patriots be seriously concerned about the progress of Ty Warren's rehab? Why else did they select 3 defensive lineman in the Draft and have another defender in for a visit? Kevin Carter is reportedly in town and may soon sign a deal.

Foxsports.com is reporting that the Patriots are interested in free agent defensive lineman Kevin Carter. Carter was reportedly in Foxboro visiting the Patriots and could sign a deal as early as Wednesday.

The Patriots have three former first round picks on the defensive line (Ty Warren, Vince Wilfok, Richard Seymour), but in their eyes that may not be enough. Carter was the first round pick of the St. Louis Rams in 1995. The 14-year veteran is looking for a home after parting ways with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this off-season. That home could be in Foxboro, land of the veteran's last resort.

New England has built its own reputation of extending careers of productive veterans that others don't want. Rodney Harrison, Mike Vrabel, Junior Seau all found success in New England after being discarded by their former teams. Carter could be next on that list.

The 6-foot-6, 305-pound lineman has played in every game of his professional career. He's had four different stops over the past decade including; the Rams, Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins and Buccaneers.

The interest in Carter could be more than just his reputation as a durable and reliable player. Ty Warren is on the active/PUP list and may begin the season there - meaning he'll miss the first 6 games.

Warren appeared in 13 games last year, recording 41 tackles (32 solo) and a pair of sacks. Carter played in all 16 games for the Buccaneers, finishing with 49 tackles (28 solo),four sacks and two passes defended.

By adding Carter to the roster, New England would kill two birds with one stone. They'd add an insurance policy in case Warren's return is delayed and strengthen the quality of the backups behind the front three. The Patriots currently list Jarvis Green, Mike Wright and Le Kevin Smith as the second unit behind Warren, Wilfork and Seymour. .

According to the report Carter visited the Detroit Lions, but they've moved on.
