Health Issue Or A Performance Problem?

The Tennessee Titans have problems with their defensive line and one player feeling the heat is defensive end Jevon Kearse. The defensive end was a scratch last week, but what was the official explanation?

Veteran defensive end Jevon Kearse apparently won't face a fine or any further discipline for leaving the stadium before Sunday night's 31-9 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

For the first time in either of his two tenures as a Tennessee Titan, the veteran end was a healthy scratch and did not stick around on the sideline with his teammates as is the custom for inactive players.

"This is between he and I. It was a big game. It was an emotional thing, and we'll sort it out," Fisher said. "As far as the message is concerned, he's a good teammate, he's had a great career and he's still got a lot left.

"He won't be fined for that. Again, that's between he and I."

Fisher wasn't completely clear as to whether team rules forbid players from leaving and not watching the game if they are not part of the 45-man game-day roster.

"My rules don't change from year to year. I have consistent rules. But again, this is between Jevon and I," Fisher said.

Fisher and the defensive staff decided to deactivate Kearse in favor of end Dave Ball, who was active for only the second time this season. The coach explained the move by saying Ball's versatility with his ability to fill in as a defensive tackle played into the choice, because tackle Jason Jones was out with a shoulder injury for the second consecutive week.

Notes:
--Another week, another defensive back on the shelf for the winless Titans. This time it is CB Nick Harper, who underwent surgery Monday for a broken right forearm and will miss 4-6 weeks because of the procedure.

The Titans were already without nickel back Vincent Fuller, out with a similar injury, and CB Cortland Finnegan, who missed his second straight game with a hamstring issue. Finnegan might be back this week against New England.

"I believe it will be about the same as Vinnie, so it will be four to six weeks," Fisher said. "We've got a bye week coming, and if Nick ends up being four weeks, he ends up playing the last eight games. We'll be stretched a little bit thin for the next couple of weeks, which we have been, but our hope is we'll get them both back."

It left Tennessee with rookies Jason McCourty and Ryan Mouton going against Peyton Manning and the Colts for most of the second half.

QB Status Quo:
--Don't hold your breath expecting a quarterback change anytime soon for the Titans. Jeff Fisher maintains that Kerry Collins is his man under center, despite calls from fans for Vince Young.

Young mopped up in Sunday night's 31-9 loss, going 0-for-3, while Collins was 19 of 32 for 164 yards with one interception.

"You'll just have to wait and see, I guess. I've been doing this a long time, and right now that's not the root of our problem. It's a team issue that we have to improve as a team," Fisher said of a quarterback change.

On a winless team, would a change at quarterback have any effect on a team.

"I didn't say I was going to. I said there's a possibility. I didn't say when I was going to, and I didn't say when I was going to. Kerry is our starter, and Vince is our backup," Fisher said. "I'd be happy to field more questions about it, but I've made my point. You can speculate all you want about how that's going to affect the team, and how that's going to happen. I didn't say I was going to do that."

Stevens Update:
--TE Craig Stevens is out of the hospital after taking a hit from teammate Michael Griffin while covering the opening kickoff of the game.

Stevens suffered a concussion and will be out an indefinite amount of time as he recovers from the head injury.

"He was released from the hospital this morning. He's home. He's clearing up," Fisher said. "He'll be fine. As far as his expected return, I can't comment because each and every concussion we endure is different. But he is clearing up. He's got a mild headache this morning."
