The New England Patriots addressed their wide receiver position this week by signing former pass catcher David Patten. The team announced that Patten will return to Foxboro for his 13th NFL season. Termsd of the dfeal were unavailable

Perhaps the Patriots were trying to recapture some of their glory days when they opted to sign former free agent receiver David Patten on Wednesday. After all, Patten was a key part of New England's three Super Bowl wins, playing in Foxboro from 2001-04.

As a member of the Patriots' receiving corps. Patten made 165 receptions for 2,513 yards and 16 touchdowns during the 54 regular-season games (44 starts) he played in. He also made 3 starts in the six postseason games he saw action in,

At 5-foot-11, 190-pounds, Patten wasn't the tallest target on the field, but made the most of his opportunities, stretching the field with his speed and making acrobatic catches. Perhaps his crowing achievement came during the 2001 wildcard playoff game in Foxboro, also referred to the snow game (or the tuck rule game). Trailing 13-3 in the fourth quarter, Tom Brady looked to Patten to help get the Patriots rolling. Patten finished the day with 8 receptions for 108 yards, and crucial 4th down reception in overtimes that allowed Adam Vinatieri to get into position to kick the winning field goal.

Patten also holds the Patriots career long pass play, a 91-yard TD pass from Tom Brady against the Colts in 2001.

Patten was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Giants in 1997. He played for five clubs during his career; the New York Giants (1997-99), Cleveland Browns (2000), Patriots (2001-04), Washington Redskins (2005-06) and New Orleans Saints (2007-08). He also went to training camp with the Browns last year (2009), but was released prior to the start of the season.
