Scouting Report On WR Torry Holt

Torry Holt in Jacksonville

So the Patriots have a shiny new receiver for the roster. Well, maybe not new, but new to them. We asked NFL insider Charlie Bernstein who covers the Jaguars, for his take on how Holt will fit and if he thinks the 11-year veteran has any gas left in the tank.

Scouting Report by Charlie Bernstein:
Torry Holt was a solid veteran presence for the Jaguars last season and the young receivers benefited from his presence. Holt did such a good job mentoring and helping the development of the team's young players that it basically cost him his job.

On the field, Torry still runs good routes, but the separation just isn't there like it used to be. Holt is no longer a deep threat and his hands have become somewhat of a question mark.

He will likely play better in New England now that he has a legitimate quarterback that can go through his progressions. Far too often last season Holt had to adjust to passes and attempt to make one-handed grabs as the ball rarely hit him between the "8" and the "1". I would expect Holt to be a solid contributor and although he won't make anyone forget about the potential loss of Wes Welker, he will help.

Patriots Insider Analysis by Jon Scott:
Holt will compete with veteran receiver David Patten to solidify the Patriots WR corps. Similar to seasons past, Holt is not guaranteed a roster spot, but his contract puts him in a prime spot to make the final cut at Patten (or a younger WR) expense.

With Wes Welker expected to see limited action this summer, it's possible that Holt and Patten both make the roster along with Brandon Tate, Julian Edelman, Sam Aiken, Matt Slater, Darnell Jenkins and Isaiah Stanback. Randy Moss and Welker are the only certain locks on the roster.

According to NFL Insiders, it's possible that Welker begins the season on the PUP list if rehab on the torn ligaments in his knee preclude him fro participating fully in training camp.

Expect to see a heated battle for roster spots in the bottom half of the Patriots WR corps. Things will get even more interesting should New England select a WR in this week's Draft - something they're expected to do.
