| Biography: |
In April of 1998 Randy Moss was a sure first-round pick by most experts' analysis, probably even a top-five pick in the NFL draft. He was a first-rounder, but he slid all the way to the 21st pick … and the Vikings couldn’t be happier.
Before the 2001 season, they extended his contract through 2008, and he was named to the Pro Bowl (but didn’t attend) again following the 2002 and 2003 seasons.
Moss only came into the league as a rookie in 1998, made the Pro Bowl, was named rookie of the year by nearly every national sports publication, selected to Pro Football Weekly’s All-NFC and All-NFL teams, named to the All-Madden Team, earned NFL Alumni Best at each position award for wide receivers.
He set numerous team and NFL records as a rookie. He set a team record for being the first receiver to have back-to-back three-touchdown games and for highest average per catch in a game (54.3) against Dallas. He led the team in catches six times and receiving yards nine times.
He set many more NFL records, including touchdown receptions by a rookie (17), breaking the mark of 13 held since 1952 by Green Bay’s Bill Howton and San Diego’s John Jefferson in 1979 and tied Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch with 10 touchdowns of 40-plus yards. He and Cris Carter combined to set the NFL record for most touchdown receptions by a duo with 29 (the old mark was 27). He led the NFL with 17 TD catches and tied the team’s single-season record.
Other Vikings records held by Moss include: Rookie receiving yards, rookie touchdown catches, first rookie to score two touchdowns in his first game in the NFL, most games with a touchdown pass in a season (11), most two-touchdown games as a rookie (four) and most plays of 40 or more yards (14).
2003: Had another stellar season, Named to the Pro Bowl (did not attend), first-team All-Pro by the Associated Press. Had eight games with at least 100 yards receiving and led the NFL with a career-high-tying 17 TDs. Had 1,632 receiving yards, a Vikings record, and ranked second in the league with 111 catches, a career high. Became the first player in NFL history to average at least 100 yards receiving and one TD per game over the course of a 16-game season. First player in league history to post 1,000-yard seasons in each of his first six years. Hold NFL record for most receiving yards in first six seasons (8,375), 509 more than Jerry Rice’s mark.
2002: Named to the Pro Bowl, but did not attend because of a knee injury late in the season. Led the NFC with 106 receptions and 1,347 receiving yards. Set NFL record for most receiving yards (6,743) in first five seasons. Has yet to miss a game in his career. Ranks second in team history with 60 TD receptions
2001: Moss was snubbed in his bid for a fourth Pro Bowl appearance, as the team fell to 5-11. Still put up good numbers, catching 82 passes for 1,233 yards. Reached 5,000 career receiving yards faster than anyone in the history of the NFL, doing it in 59 games. Outpaced all other receivers in history in his first four seasons with 5,396 yards (Jerry Rice is a distant second with 4,881).
2000: The question entering 2000 was whether a fourth starting quarterback was going to hinder Moss’ production. Instead, Moss led the team to the NFC Championship Game, was named the Pro Bowl’s Most Outstanding Player after setting records for catches (nine) and receiving yards (212) and br |
