How Acquired: Signed by the Patriots as an UFA (March 11, 2003) Scouting
Report: Has the athletic ability when healthy to be a dominant force at the
outside position. Has excellent speed and a nose for the ball. Mostly an outside
backer, can get to the QB when rushing from the edge. Plays primarily on the strong
side. Once his health returns, may not be as productive as earlier in his career,
but still needs to be accounted for by the offense. Showed significant confidence
in his play as his strength returned in the hip. Pro Experience: New
England Patriots (2003-present) Missed most of the 2003 season due to a fractured hip injury and was placed in injured reserve. He managed to play in 2 games, notching just 5 tackles, but was credited with 2 sacks and a fumble
recovery. Had more significant playing time in 2004 and worked his way into the
linebacker rotation at the outside linebacker postion. Colvin is listed as being behind Willie McGinest on the depth chart. Chicago Bears (1999-2002)
Became a fulltime starter at strongside linebacker in 2001 and set personal bests
in starts, tackles and sacks. Started all 16 regular season games and lead the
team with 10.5 sacks, added in 79 tackles and two interceptions. Forged a niche
in up-and-coming Bears defense with productive play as an edge rusher and strong
side linebacker in 2000. Moved to linebacker after playing defensive end in college,
but lined up at rush end in passing situations. College Experience: Purdue
Three year starter for Boilermakers, including first team all-Big Ten honors
after senior season, second team all-Big Ten after junior year, and honorable
mention all-Big Ten after sophomore season. Ranked second in Purdue history with
61 tackles for loss (272 yards in losses). 33.5 career sacks in 36 career starts.
Led team and set Purdue single-season record with 15 sacks as senior. Led defensive
line with 71 total tackles (35 solo), one blocked kick, two forced fumbles and
one pass broken-up.
