Saban Expects Lacy To Shine For Pros

Eddie Lacy

Eddie Lacy, projected by many to be the first running back selected in the upcoming NFL draft, is still something of a mystery to professional scouts, who make their decisions in part on how players perform on pro tests. Lacy has not done that.

Eddie Lacy has a chance to go through the paces of the NFL scouts at a combine. He declined, claiming a hamstring problem suffered while working out in Arizona...working out to participate in the combine.

When scouts from every National Football League team came to Tuscaloosa in early March to look at a handful of prospects who had played at Alabama, Lacy again took a pass. At the time he suggested he would not be working out for the pro scouts.

That will not be the case. Lacy -- and perhaps some others -- will work out at Bama Thursday.

Lacy was a key performer for Alabama's 2012 national championship team as he rushed 204 times for 1,322 yards (6.5 yards per carry) and 17 touchdowns. Lacy, 6-0, 220, was the Most Valuable Offensive Player in the Tide's 42-14 rout of Notre Dame in the BCS National Championship Game in Miami Gardens as he rushed 20 times for 140 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 17 yards and another touchdown.

Alabama Coach Nick Saban said, "If he's healthy tomorrow, he'll run fast. He's faster than you think. He has very deceptive speed, and very deceptive quickness. For three or four years around here, I've been watching Eddie Lacy, who everybody thinks is a little (too) straight-line as a runner, and can't make people miss, make people miss in the hole, with his sudden quickness and great change of direction.

"He's physical, tough, he's got great size. He's a really good all-around player, a good receiver, he can block in pass protection, and he can be physical when he needs to and get it downhill.

"I think Eddie is a very, very complete player. I don't really see a lot of flaws in his game. I think he'll be a very, very good player for somebody."
