New England traded one of the all-time great Patriots Tuesday.
Who Fills Mankins' Shoes?
New England shocked the Patriots Nation with yesterday’s trade of All-Pro offensive lineman Logan Mankins to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While it’s clear that the six-time pro bowler will be hard to replace, sources have reported that team personnel are confident in filling his position at left guard with players currently on the team’s roster. The top candidates to fill Mankins’ spot include Marcus Cannon, Josh Kline and Jordan Devey.
Cannon has been with the Patriots since he was drafted by the team in 2011 as a fifth round selection. He’s had seven starts and recorded 37 games with New England. While he has experience in both tackle and guard positions, he been primarily used as a right guard. The 26-year old will enter into free agency after the 2014 season.
Currently listed as the starter on New England’s depth chart, Josh Kline is another candidate to take over the role of left guard. Kline joined the team last year as an undrafted free agent and played seven games in his rookie season. Kline took over the Mankins role at left guard once last year against the Ravens in Week 16.
After a notable preseason, Devey could also be moved up in New England’s depth chart. While he spent last season as a member of the practice squad, the Memphis product has started all three of New England’s preseason games.
The trade also leaves some room for offensive lineman Dan Connolly and Ryan Wendall who have been vying for a starter spot at center. Connolly has been primarily used at guard and will likely stay there with Mankins gone. Rookies Cam Fleming, Bryan Stork and Jon Halapio are potential options who could also make the roster.
