Patriots Trade Gorin to Cardinals

Brandon Gorin at Patriots training camp

First reported by Scout.com, the New England Patriots have made official the trade of Brandon Gorin to the Arizona Cardinals. The Patriots have been chastised for not being aggressive enough during the offseason to build depth on the roster at wide receiver and linebacker. One area the team hasn't received much praise for stockpiling talent is on the offensive line.

Foxborough, Mass. - Scout.com has confirmed that the New England Patriots have traded veteran offensive lineman Brandon Gorin to the Arizona Cardinals for a conditional 2007 draft pick. New England will receive a sixth-round pick if Gorin makes the final roster and a seventh-round if he does not.

The 6-foot-6, 308-pound offensive tackle has been the Patriots top reserve tackle since joining the team in 2002. Gorin split repetitions at right tackle with rookie offensive lineman Ryan O'Callaghan during this year's training camp. The Rookie has impressed the coaching staff enough to warrant a bigger share of playing time at the position until the return of former starter Nick Kaczur.

Gorin's name became synonymous with trade rumors last week when a scout from the Dallas Cowboys attended training camp in Foxborough. It was believed the Patriots were looking to deal the Purdue product to Dallas for linebacker Scott Shanle. Although the deal with Dallas never materialized, New England found a new partner in Arizona.

Arizona has been looking for additional help on the offensive line due to the questionable status of starting right tackle Oliver Ross. Ross is out for two to four weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. The Cardinals have been unable to get their rushing game going thus far in the preseason with signature off-season acquisition Edgerrin James managing just 5 yards on four carries. The team's leading rusher is rookie quarterback Matt Leinart who scrambled twice for 29 yards.

Gorin is a versatile lineman who has played at both right and left tackle. He saw an increase in playing time (12 regular season appearances with 8 starts) when Matt Light, Nick Kaczur and Tom Ashworth were sidelined by various ailments during the 2005 season; Gorin has had 18 regular season starts in 31 appearances over his three seasons in New England according to NFL.com.

Originally drafted in the seventh round of the 2001 NFL draft (201st overall) by the San Diego Chargers, Gorin was signed to the Patriots practice squad September 5, 2002.

The Gorin Trade was the team's second this month. The first was a deal with the Cleveland Browns that sent center Ross Tucker to the Cleveland Browns for a conditional draft pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.
