Patriots Sign Sanders and Williams

FOXBORO -- The New England Patriots signed a pair of defenders on Thursday to bolster their secondary. Rather than re-sign some of their own, the Patriots elected to go in different direction with their defensive backfield for 2008. CB Lewis Sanders (Atlanta) and S Tank Williams (Minnesota) both signed deals.

The Patriots announced that CB Lewis Sanders (Atlanta) and S Tank Williams (Minnesota) both signed deal with the Patriots on Thursday. Terms of the deals were not announced. A league source confirmed that Williams signed a one-year deal

New England had plenty of roster spots to fill in their defensive backfield after opting not to resign Randall Gay, Asante Samuel and Eugene Wilson. Gay signed a deal with the Saints while Samuel accepted a big contract with the Eagles. Eugene Wilson is not expected back and has made a number of visits to teams needing defensive help.

Sanders, 29, was originally selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fourth round (95th overall) in the 2000 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound veteran has 25 starts in 87 career games. He has played for the Browns (2000-04), Houston Texans (2005-06) and the Atlanta Falcons (2007).

Williams, 27, was originally selected by the Tennessee Titans in the second round (45th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-2, 223-pound Stanford product started 59 of the 70 games he's appeared in. Williams has played fro the Titans (2002-05), Minnesota Vikings (2006-07).
